Become a Friend and enjoy chances to get closer…
The Friends promote awareness and enjoyment of Rotorua Museum as an essential part of our community.
We are here to help the museum in any way we can – by supporting existing programmes and initiating projects of our own.
The Friends provide a tangible link between the museum and our community.
The Friends are proud of Rotorua Museum of Art & History. Acclaimed in New Zealand and internationally, our museum welcomes over 100,000 visitors from around the world each year.
The museum presents an exciting programme of changing exhibitions which feature historical and contemporary fine art and photography as well as telling the ‘Great Stories’ of our area.
Friends will actively help the museum as it works towards the completion of the Centennial Development in August 2011. Your membership at this time is very important.
Key events in the Friends history
Over the last 45 years the Friends of Rotorua Museum have actively acquired a rich collection of contemporary New Zealand art, which is housed in the museum’s storage facility and available for use in a range of exhibitions.
Since its inception the Friends have co-hosted a biennial survey, Rotorua Artists. This has allowed local artists to test their mettle, raise their profile and win major prizes.
In 2000 the Friends mounted Mudpool Modernism, an important survey exhibition, and in 2006, Wilfred Stanley Wallis – the Area in Between.
Floor talks, lectures, historical walks and art excursions, along with practical projects to help the museum such as the 2003 purchase of Swedish folding stools, and a wheelchair, keep members involved.
