Stage I: The Viewing Platform

It is thought that the original Viewing Platform was closed, and removed, due to fears of more earthquakes following the devastating Napier earthquake of 1931. The re-opening of the Viewing Platform marked the completion of Stage I of the Centennial Development project.
Timing: Completed March 2006

Stage II: North Wing Extensions

Gallery and basement space extending from the end of the current north wing.
International standard art gallery featuring air-conditioning to include temperature and humidity control, and removal of Hydrogen Sulphide.
Timing: Completed November 2008

Stage III: South Wing Extensions

The south wing extension is the largest stage of the project. Once opened the museum will gain 55% more public gallery space. It will also see an internal refurbishment of the previous south wing galleries and a substantial increase in storage and working areas.
Timing: Currently under construction (due to open to the public on 3rd September)
