Exploring / developing either line, texture, pattern, or tonal variation.
Discover forms of Maori art and use learning techniques for observational drawings of taonga, whakairo, tukutuku and kowhaiwhai. Use observational drawings to create a unique art work that represents students understanding.

Maori Battalion
Classroom introduction and presentation using images and lesson aids
Gallery exploration & activity.
Students will explore and compare the different conditions, battles and countries.
Look at map locations. See a timeline of events and investigate food, clothing and shelter of the time. Dress up in Army attire.

Who were they and where did they come from?
Where did they go?
What did they do?
How did they feel upon coming home?
“Ko Te Oranga Tuturu o Te Arawa” – Early Way of Life for Te Arawa
A highly interactive programme, students participate in a shared learning experience gaining insight into how and why Te Arawa came to Rotorua. Students will explore the ways in which natural resources were utilised to cook, fish, hunt and gather before the arrival of the first European settlers in the 188O’s.
Choose from either early Maori instruments and games activity or the film Rotorua Stories as an additional component.

Students will investigate what taonga is and explore significant examples of Te Arawa Taonga featured in the galleries. Choose 2-3 from the following to focus on. Te Oha (Pataka / Storehouse) Te Murirangaranga
( Tutanekai’s Flute) Rangitakaroro (Gateway from Te Koutu Pa) Tutauru (Adze used to carve the Te Arawa waka) Horoirangi (Mauri– Carved stone figure) Kahumaemae o Pareraututu ( Dogskin cloak)
Inquiry learning tasks will challenge students to question ownership, use, change over time and importance today. Choose from porotiti making or the film Rotorua Stories as an additional component.

Gallery exploration & activity highlighting a variety of famous Te Arawa legends. Hatu Patu, Hinemoa & Tutanekai, Ngatoroirangi & Tama o hoi, and Ngatoroirangi & the coming of fire. (Geothermal activity).
