When Ferdinand Magellan entered the calm and peaceful waters of the Pacific Ocean in the 16th century he named it Mar Pacifico! beginning four centuries of perceptions of sun-drenched tranquillity, swaying palms and glistening waters.
Curator Barry Dabb has drawn on Rotorua Museum and private collections to create a colourful multi-media exhibition that seeks to balance glamorised versions of the Pacific with a more realistic view.
