“In pitch black darkness – they had pursued us all through the night – the word came down the line that as soon as we heard the whistle we were to fix bayonets and charge – there was a moment’s hesitation then this chap jumped up and started to do the haka and away we went yelling and screaming – and they just turned and ran – for once we started to believe we could beat these guys – that we were every bit as good as them”.
