Three iconic attractions bring to life the timeless and powerful story of the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption, in which more than 150 people died, changing forever Rotorua’s history, landscape and lives.
Rotorua Museum: discover the essence of Rotorua’s fascinating history through innovative displays, beautiful taonga (treasures) and interactive cinema experiences.- Waimangu Volcanic Valley: explore the world’s newest geothermal ecosystem – a place of outstanding natural beauty… unspoilt and protected by law.
- Whakarewarewa – The Living Thermal Village: meet the descendants of the survivors of the Mount Tarawera eruption, and experience New Zealand’s only living, Maori and geothermal village.
ROTORUA INSIDE OUT
Discover some of Rotorua’s great stories and fascinating historical sites through two ’must-do’ experiences.
Rotorua Museum: Rotorua’s rich culture, volatile landscape and legendary figures are all brought to life in this ‘must see’ museum. Innovative displays, art exhibitions, cinema experiences and guided tours enable visitors to explore the fascinating history of this unique region. Located centrally in the iconic Bath House building, Rotorua Museum can be explored from basement to rooftop, with fantastic views of the city and lake. Open 9am-8pm (Oct-Mar) and 9am-5pm (Apr-Sep).
Kia Ora guided city walks take you on a fascinating 4.5km tour of Rotorua’s key inner city sites including Government Gardens, Pukeroa Hill, Ohinemutu Village, St Faith’s Church and the lakefront. Local guides make these tours unforgettable with their extensive knowledge and personal tales.
Walks depart twice daily from the Rotorua i-Site on Fenton St at 10am and 2pm (assemble 15mins prior). Small groups (1-12 people). For walk bookings phone 07 349 0972.

TARAWERA LEGACY
Tarawera Legacy combines three Rotorua attractions to tell you Rotorua’s greatest story.
Follow in the path of the Tuhourangi people a sub-tribe of Te Arawa, from their arrival in the Rotorua region through to the devastating 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera. In this moving story of strength, courage and resilience you will encounter legendary Tuhourangi ancestors, discover their warm culture and traditions, and become part of the dramatic event that changed the course of history for the Rotorua region.
